hey there,
before we get started, here’s a quick intro on who i am:
my name is jero and i’ve worked in marketing/growth for most of my career, ranging from renowned clothing boutiques to local businesses to early-stage startups.
throughout this time, i’ve worked in various marketing channels, while also self-teaching programming, design, and other creative mediums.
& i want to welcome you to 'work in progress' - a place to document my journey and share lessons in building products, personal growth, and exploring curiosities.
my goal with this blog/newsletter/whatever you want to call it is to create a repository of lessons and experiences throughout this journey.
hopefully, some of these lessons will help someone else on their journey and guide them through any challenges.
no one will be the same version of themselves forever. people are constantly changing and evolving. so essentially, we're all a 'work in progress.'
& as time goes on, i expect this blog to pivot and change to fit whatever situation i'm facing at the time.
lesson 001: just start
i’ve recently joined buildspace’s nights & weekends s5. in a nutshell, it’s a 6-week program to work on an idea alongside thousands of others.
i’ve been trying to teach myself to code through ruby on rails for sometime now, but have never launched anything. i’ve tried to build some stuff on my own, but abandon the project within a couple of weeks.
now, i’m looking to change that this time around. i’m working on building a platform for people to find people in their city who share similar interests as them. it’s called ‘the neighborhood.’
alongside buildspace, i’ve decided to finally launch this newsletter and start writing online. it’s another thing that i would start, then stop within a short time frame.
so looking forward to using the newsletter as a way to hold myself accountable, while tracking the progress that i’m making during this time.
again, i think the biggest lesson from this week is to just start. i’ve spent HOURS on just planning, but never taking action. now some initial planning is good for you, but don’t overdo it by trying to plan v5 when you still have to get to v1.
in the overused words of mike tyson, ‘everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.’
with the neighborhood, i’m looking to get v1 out and then let the market give me feedback on what is needed.
as for this newsletter, its going to take some time to get feedback, but i’d love to hear your thoughts. was it helpful? did it resonate? did it suck? was it boring? i’d love to hear all feedback. :)
n&w s5 weekly recap:
this was wk1 of nights & weekends s5 where we spent the week deciding on an idea to work on for the next 6 weeks.
as i mentioned earlier, i’m working on a community finder called the neighborhood. it took me some time to narrow down an idea. in full transparency, i was concerned if this is the ‘right’ project to work on.
but i finally had an epiphany-esque moment where i realized that it’s my first ever product. it doesn’t have to be ‘the one'.’ just build it and see how it goes. i need to get used to shipping products, not trying to hit a home run right now.
i launched a landing page to see if there is some demand for this idea and to build a waitlist, if so. you can visit the landing page here.
other than that, that’s all i have for this week. stay tuned for next week’s updates and lessons learned.
